“Crabs for Mother’s Day” Contest
Apr 15th, 2010 | By | Category: Just Sayin'Every year, for Mother’s Day, my husband and I would get a couple dozen steamed crabs and head in to my mom’s house. We’d always get her something else as well, but the crabs were her favorite. It’s how we kicked off the warm weather with our first crabs of the season.
My mom passed away too young over four years ago. When we launched Welcome To Baltimore, Hon! earlier this year, it got me thinking—what could we do for our readers so that they could do something nice for their moms?
So here we go – We are holding our first Welcome To Baltimore, Hon! “Crabs for Mother’s Day” Contest, and the first prize is a doozy: a bushel (you read that right) of #1 large steamed crabs generously donated by Wise Avenue Crab House located in Dundalk and a framed, vintage print of a mother and child with a poem about “Mother” by that master of the macabre, Edgar Allan Poe.
The poem is actually short and sweet and doesn’t mention a thing about killing mom, bricking her up behind a wall in a wine cellar, or removing all her teeth. We think that’s a good thing.
You want to enter? Here’s what you do: in 100 words or less, describe the best Baltimore memory you have about your mom (This doesn’t mean she has to be dead. In fact, we’re assuming that many moms are still with us.).
We will read through the entries, and choose the one we like best. That person will win the bushel of crabs and the print.
Second and third place winners will receive Big Boyz Bail Bonds T-shirts. Why a bail bond T-shirt for Mother’s Day? Well that fine woman who done birthed you may have need for these guys to get your sorry butt out of the clink.
You must be 18 or older to enter. Employees of this site and their families are not eligible for this contest. Send your entry in the body of an email to mom@welcometobaltimorehon.com. Don’t you go sendin’ us no attachments, hon. We don’t know where your files been.
Be sure to include your name, address, and phone number. Entries must be received no later than Monday, April 26. Winners will be contacted by May 5.
The first-place winner will be responsible for contacting Wise Avenue Crab House and for picking up the bushel of crabs. Welcome To Baltimore, Hon! is not responsible for any lost e-mail that end up spinning around in cyber space or for folks who get their stuff to us late.
We’re also going to pack up that print really nicely to mail to you, but if an elephant falls on it in transit and breaks it, we’re not responsible for that either. Just go get yourself some glue.
Do something nice for your mom – write about her!
Weren’t you listening? The link to enter is mom@welcometobaltimorehon.com. Good luck!
Mmmmm…we can almost taste steamed crabs already!

Will our entry be denied if it is a little over 100 words?
Erin,
Yup. You need to cut it down some. Take out some prepositional phrases or a sentence here or there…
We have to keep it at the limit because we expect a lot of entries. After all, who doesn’t want steamed crabs–especially if they’re free?! : )
Wojo
I wrote mine in Word so it could count the words for me and got it down to exactly 100. However, when I copied it into the email, I got so excited thinking about crabs, that I clicked send before putting my contact info in. Of course, as I was clicking the send button, my brain was saying, “Wait, wait, wait!!” but my hand ignored my brain as usual.
I resent it with the info, so please disregard the first one.
100 words was difficult. I had to leave out some of my best stuff!!! Thanks for the contest. I think for a week you should limit your column to 100 words!! See how we feel.

One summer afternoon, I was about 10, my Mom and I stopped at a road-side stand and bought live crabs. The man put the basket in the trunk of our Cutlass Supreme. When we got home, she popped the trunk and the crabs were everywhere! She collected them all, put them back in the crate and put them in the refrigerator. About an hour later, she opened the fridge and the crabs were swinging from the racks! One even jumped out and started to chase the dog! It was hilarious! I will never forget that day.
That refrigerator must have been dead because when you put crabs in the fridge or ice them down they stop moving. After an hour they should not have been swinging from the racks!

Loved Vickie’s photo from atop the Bromo Seltzer Tower. I worked with a vickie contie many moons ago at North Charles General Hospital. Vickie – if this is you – hello from seattle.
I have so many wonderful memories of my Mom. Too many to mention, but my favorite would probably be when my brothers and I were kids and we would sit around the picnic table in the summer eating crabs listening to her tell us stories of when she and her sister were Baltimore Colt cheerleaders. We were in awe and had no idea who the colts even were at our age. It wasn’t until we got older that we realized that our mom was part of an oganization that was so famous. She’s our Hero!
