Good Sports

Childhood favorites such as kickball and dodgeball are the rage, with teams cropping up all over town. Emphasizing on fun rather than athleticism, these sports are a good way to combine socializing with healthful physical activity.

Kickball League of Baltimore, which formed in 2001, has more than 250 kickball teams playing at Riverside and Latrobe parks in Federal Hill and at Patterson Park in the east side.

Play Baltimore offers a wider range of games, including dodgeball, kickball, flag football, softball, basketball and tennis. Most Play Baltimore games are held in Hunt Valley.

In either case, you can join an existing team or form your own with a group of friends or co-workers. Joining a team costs in the range of $50 for a season, which goes toward paying for referees, scheduling and equipment. Individuals are expected to have their own personal gear, such as tennis racket or baseball glove.

If you’re looking for a looser free-for-all, Baltimore Dodgeball Alliance plays Thursday nights at 9 p.m. in the Bloomsbury Field House at 106 Bloomsbury in Catonsville. The annual membership fee to join BDA is $10.

It’s all good, but what about capture the flag? Anybody up for a game of “Red Light, Green Light?”
