Roc was a prime-time comedy that ran for three seasons on Fox from 1991-1994, produced by and starring Baltimorean Charles “Roc” Dutton. The show chronicled the life of garbage collector Roc Emerson and his family, who happened to live in Baltimore.
Unlike other urban sitcoms, Roc avoided the cheap laughs and buffoonery, often taking dramatic turns to address youth gangs, violence, drugs, and the plight of African-Americans. Among actors who appeared on the show are Ton Loc, Heavy D, Jamie Foxx and Richard Roundtree.
With a cast of veteran stage performers, the second season of Roc was broadcast live – the only time a full season of a prime-time show was done live since the 1950s.
Although critically acclaimed and with a devoted following of viewers, Roc never achieved sufficient ratings to remain on the TV schedule.
